Hi Benji,
For now you have to add manually css code to additional css form.

then find the element you want to change the background or its color. For example if you want to change the background of main menu, you could do like this:

Is there no way to change the colour shown as ‘Theme Colour’ in the customiser to a different colour in CSS rather than changing each element individually?

No, we just provide those 6 theme color. If you want another color you have add css code manually.
