I appreciate your answer. yes, I was not installing both the files. that resolved my issue with the registration, that was not very intuitive.
I’ve got the plug in working now, but not quite the way I was expecting…

I think it’s theme issue. Your theme is already have featured image feature.

Try to disable ECAE feature image feature, and see if it helps. Please take a look this screenshot :

I have not been able to find menu identical to what you are describing, but I did uncheck "show featured media" in the posts submenu.
Unfortunately that does not change the home page, only inside the post. I cannot find any other settings.
I realize this is not your problem… ughh… I was so close to getting this to look the way I want, but yet so far….
