I installed this, set it to show the first 150 characters but it is showing the full content on the index page and archive/category pages. If I disable this plugin, it goes back to showing the excerpt. How do I get this showing just the excerpt?

It depends on your file on your theme and it seems that your theme does not use standard code for generating excerpt. Try to change with another theme and if our plugin works so the problem is on your theme.
